Surviving
Noise draws them. Gunshots are heard a long way off. Melee is quiet. Crouch to sneak.
Night is deadly. Zombies move faster after dark and you can barely see. Your flashlight helps you, but makes you easier to spot.
Fortify. Swing a hammer at doors and windows to board them up. Build walls, gates, spikes and turrets with B. When an area is fully enclosed, the HUD says SECURE: you heal faster, can sleep, and no zombies spawn inside.
Hordes arrive every third night at 22:00 and come straight for you. They will break through weak walls.
Infection. Bites can infect you. Only antibiotics cure it.
